- Another early AL match, and it's the Toronto Blue Jays in Ohio to play the Cleveland Indians.
- It looks encouraging for the Blue Jays, who went an MLB-best 24-7 in spring training, and registered a 3.05ERA in that time. Defence, check. Offence, well that has never been a problem.
- In addition to Jose Bautista, who has hit 77 homers in the last 2 seasons, the Toronto Blue Jays also have Brett Lawrie, who is batting .524 in spring training and Adam Lind, who has 26 homers from last year and 87RBIs.
- Everything looks in place for a strong start, but Cleveland could not be in starker contrast as they start their season.
- While Toronto were an MLB-best 24-7 in spring training, Cleveland went an MLB-worst 7-22.
- Their ace, Fausto Carmona was arrested for identity theft after being revealed to actually be Roberto Hernandez, and so he can't open the season as he's on the restricted list.
- Another man who can't start is Ubaldo Jimenez, who is suspended for 5 games for punching an ex-teammate.
- So with the starting rotation a mess, the Indians will send Justin Masterson to the mound. Masterson went 4-5 last year with a 3.25ERA in 18 starts but his spring training performances have been dire.
- In 18 innings of work, he has given up 18 runs, and maybe he is not ok still after shoulder surgery?
- A confident Toronto Blue Jays will send out southpaw Ricky Romero to get them the win. Last year, Romero went 15-11 with a 2.92ERA, which was the 6th best ERA in the AL.
- He's been amazing in spring training too, going 2-0 and working 11 innings where he didn't give up a single run, and struck out 10.
- Last year, Romero went 7-8 on the road, and his ERA was a very good 2.91 so I think the Blue Jays are the call here.
- Last year Toronto just about edged the 7 game series, 4-3, but with an average of over 7 runs a game, there is potential here to start with a win, if Romero can play to his usual standards and keep Cleveland quiet. Take the Blue Jays!
