Nalbandian will next look to dent another Finals contender’s qualification chances when he next faces No. 4 Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals. Roddick, who holds down the No. 8 position in the year-to-date ATP Rankings, fired 10 aces and capitalised on three of eight break point chances to defeat Kazakhstani Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-4.
Roddick, who had been sidelined for a few weeks with a groin injury, said: "I played well. I would like to have not got broken in the second set, but through my first two matches the level’s been real good for me and that’s a relief coming off an injury, kinda not been practicing a lot at home just because I was hurt. It’s a nice surprise. It’s nice to be in good form."
Nalbandian and Roddick have faced off five times, but not since the 2006 year-end championships in Shanghai. The Argentine has won their past two meetings in straight sets.
