A marquee matchup between Tomas Berdych and Nikolay Davydenko is set for the Dubai second round on Wednesday. It is the 11th career meeting between the two players. Tomas Berdych and Nikolay Davydenko have faced each other 10 times heading into their second-round clash at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday. To say Davydenko is dominating the head-to-head series would be an understatement. He leads it a whopping 9-1, including a perfect 7-0 on hard courts. They most recently squared off at last fall's Paris Masters, where Davydenko pulled out a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-0 third-round victory. Berdych's lone win over Davydenko came two years ago at Wimbledon, where he dominated 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Now is as good a time as ever for Berdych to make some inroads against his nemesis. The seventh-ranked Czech is 12-3 for his 2011 campaign, which includes a semifinal in Chennai and quarterfinals at the Australian Open, Rotterdam, and Marseille. Berdych kicked off his week in Dubai on Monday with a routine straight-set win over Jeremy Chardy. Davydenko, on the other hand, is toiling down at No. 39 in the world in part due to injuries. The Russian has been healthy this year, though, and is still slumping. After finishing runner-up to Roger Federer in Doha, Davydenko lost in the first round of three straight tournaments. However, he looked good on Tuesday in a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. This is a tough one to call, as current form gives Berdych a clear edge whereas a major nod goes to Davydenko in terms of head-to-head history. Unless Berdych serves extremely well and prevents his opponent from getting into a baseline rhythm, look for Davydenko to prevail in three sets.More forecasts on our site.
