Interleague play hasn't been nearly as enjoyable for the Texas Rangers this season as it was last year, but one thing that doesn't appear to have changed is their success against the Houston Astros.
The AL West-leading Rangers seek their seventh straight road win in the Lone Star series when they face the Astros on Tuesday night.
Texas (41-38) had the second-best interleague record in 2010, going 14-4 while averaging 5.7 runs. It's just 6-6 against the NL this season after dropping two of three to the New York Mets over the weekend. The Rangers are averaging 4.3 runs in interleague play.
Two of the wins came against Houston last week. Texas has won 12 of the last 15 meetings and has swept the last two series in Houston.
The Rangers hope that success continues as they try to rebound from a disappointing defeat in Sunday's series finale. They committed two errors that led to four unearned runs in an 8-5 loss, their ninth in 14 games.
"We're having our ups and downs," Mitch Moreland said. "Everybody knows what we're capable of. We're not playing like we know we can. At one point it's going to kick in."
Shortstop Elvis Andrus is doubtful for this series because of a sprained left wrist.
"I have to be 100 percent to go back," he told the Rangers' official website. "I don't want to be feeling something in the wrist and it changes my swing. If I have to take a few days off and get it right, I will." Josh Hamilton is expected to be back in the lineup after getting Sunday off. Hamilton is hitting .500 with three homers and 12 RBIs in his last 10 games against the Astros.
He won't be the only one Houston will be trying to cool off. Michael Young is batting .404 during a 12-game hitting streak, collecting two hits, including a home run Sunday. He's homered in career high-tying three straight and four of his last five games while hitting .404 during the streak.
Young went 6 for 13 against the Astros last week with two doubles and a home run.
Interleague play hasn't provided much relief for major league-worst Houston (28-51). The Astros have lost six of nine against the AL and were swept by Tampa Bay over the weekend.
Houston scored in double digits for the first time in nearly a month but gave up seven runs in the final two innings of a 14-10 loss Sunday.
The Astros have 17 blown saves in 27 chances this season for the worst conversion rate in the majors.
"I feel terrible for these guys because we are in a situation we need to win these close ball games," Mark Melancon, charged with Sunday's second blown save, told the Astros' official website. "I feel like I let the team down, which is tough."
Texas' C.J. Wilson (7-3, 3.17 ERA) and Houston's Jordan Lyles (0-2, 4.20) will be on the mound again after squaring off in last Tuesday's 5-4, 11-inning Texas victory.
Lyles gave up three runs and struck out six in seven innings while Wilson surrendered four runs and a season-high 11 hits in 6 2/3 inning.
Wilson entered having allowed three or fewer earned runs in his previous seven starts.
Lyles gave up home runs to Young and Nelson Cruz in the loss.
